Out of Innocence

Budgetary constraints occasionally tell, particularly during crowd scenes, but the bad old days have seldom looked grimmer.

Although some licence has been used, this fictionalised version of the Kerry Babies case covers one of the most pivotal points in modern Irish history. Sometimes it is well worth looking back to see just how far we have come.

As a piece of documentary dramatic recreation, Out of Innocence is meticulous and mesmerising, but as artful storytelling, it is less successful.

In terms of importance, the film ranks highly. This is a story that should be known, told and discussed. The execution however, doesn't hit the same mark and it feels quite drawn out.

Out of Innocence is a rather stilted film dramatically, sometimes clumsily written, but it's an education for anyone unfamiliar with this depressing case, and a window into a happily vanished Ireland.

The makers of Out of Innocence should be commended for bringing thoughtful sensitivity to this important film about a difficult moment in Irish history which resonates to this day.
