Though the family-friendly comedy has all the good intentions of a motivational puppy poster, it unfortunately also has the same level of intelligence and plot.

A film has to have something going for it, like a plot, instead of just relying on an adorable animal.

Though the narrative tends to be a touch too simplistic for most grown-ups, and lacks enough riotous dog action for the little ones, there's enough bite to make things worthwhile for those who just want to enjoy a sweet, wholesome dog movie.

Patrick, a perfectly agreeable kids' film about a pugnacious pug, is an unusual and welcome find in the summer schedule.

There is no actual story, and no hint at psychological realism. Just a jaded sense that viewers will watch any old rubbish with a comedy dog, and a belated attempt at third-act drama.

The film and the eponymous pug who plays him, are sly charmers who take a fairly predictable plot and make it a cozy experience well worth the investment of your time.
