Playlist

I thoroughly enjoyed this little black-and-white film.

There are no particularly moving insights, and it falls short of a proper character study, but “Playlist” does intrigue with its droll individual parts — if not the sum of them.

The soundtrack, featuring repeated use of True Love Will Find You in the End by Daniel Johnston, brings an appealingly gauche quality to the story.

Overdone plot elements with little novelty to glean.

Despite some stand-out scenes and beautiful black-and-white shooting, the sense that we've been here one too many times before is hard to shake.

This is not a perfect film but it is an interesting one.

It's like the female version of High Fidelity, but not as fresh, smart or funny.

It makes a change to see this stuff in a French movie shot in nouvelle vague-style black-and- white. And the film has a friendly sense of humour and a likeable star, Sara Forestier.
