Pokémon Detective Pikachu

It's a delight for fans to see how immersive this world actually feels.

I found this weirdly diverting... It's a counterintuitive fit for this character, and I kind of liked that about it.

Pretty well-done, and when it got to the end, the bits that are meant to tug on your heart strings twitch the very top register...

But when the earth begins to shake and villains finally show their true colors things get far less interesting.

The human characters are flat and boring...but Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu saved the entire film, and there's a lot of him...about as good as a live-action Pokémon film could be.

The central mystery of Detective Pikachu is lackluster-and sends a slightly problematic message about people with disabilities-but the production design is an impressive achievement.

For hardcore fans, it might be everything you’ve ever wished for, but for fans of the 2000s Pokémon, who stopped following the franchise (...) the numerous Easter Eggs and references might not be enough to overcome the undeniable narrative issues.

Detective Pikachu is a great time that is well worth watching in the theater if for nothing more than it’s gorgeous visuals. It’s a film that you can take the whole family to and everyone will find something to enjoy.

Detective Pikachu generally works and is a reasonably enjoyable, fun film. Considering what has happened with video game-based films in the past, that's high praise at this point.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu ultimately exists to perpetuate the media empire, and to that end, it's less interested in characters than in selling its brand to children.
