Catchy story line and a powerful performance delivered by Akshay Kumar makes the story awesome. Rai is becoming the voice of society through each of his tale. After the very best Atrangi Re his Raksha Bandhan raises voice against Dowry system. Cute siblings bond and light love story between Sapna and Lala Bhaiya makes the story good.

It’s Rant Time ! Raksha Bandhan is a regressive movie pretending to be progressive. It wants to have its cake and eat it too. Akshay Kumar plays a brother who has four sisters he has to get married before he can marry himself because he made a promise to his dying mother. The eldest one is fair and pretty, so of course she is the most accomplished and abled one. She is also Akshay’s favorite because it’s easier to get her married off, but still with a lot of dowry. The other 3 sisters on the other hand, are a monumental task. Why? Because one is fat, the other one is dark skinned and one is a tomboy. So within the first 10 minutes of the movie there is a fat shaming joke, another joke at the expense of colorism and then of course why would they spare the LGBTQ community. Then you have to endure the rest of the movie and all of its many regressive jokes, expecting us to laugh along with it. Every now and then the movie pretends to be progressive and throws in a scene thinking it’s being “woke” but is completely clueless of how regressive it’s being. In one scene Akshay proclaims - whichever guy teases any girl in the society has to marry that girl. Like seriously? That’s your solution to eve-teasing? This is the same Panchayat BS to marry off the girl to her rapist. We are in 2022. Bhoomi Padneker is treated even worse than the 4 sisters. She is literally a commodity in this movie. She has zero agency throughout the movie, being tossed around between her father and lover and even after the so called awakening, when Akshay is ready to empower his sisters, he instructs Bhumi’s character to marry whoever her father wants. What is this selective women empowerment? On technical aspect the movie has one of the worst lip sync execution I’ve ever seen in Bollywood. Hardly 30% of the movie has correct lip sync. It’s not just distracting, but also completely embarrassing for Bollywood. If nothing else, Aanand L. Rai movies are alway known for its memorable songs, but this movie doesn’t even have that. No matter how annoying Chaka Chak got by the end, everyone was singing it at one point or the other. There is not a single song that I remember from this movie. Overall Raksha Bandhan is one giant black spot in both Director Aanand L. Rai and Kanika Dhillon’s career. It is as fake and contrived as Akshay Kumar’s fake black mustache in the movie. Avoid this one at all cost. Raksha Bandhan is a masterclass at how to not punch down for the sake of comedy.
