Section 8

All would be forgiven if the action was top notch, but instead it’s merely serviceable. ... A case of a young director calling their shot, or pure hubris? Possibly a bit of both.

This is a fun one and should be checked out by action film fans.

Unashamedly and proudly a throwback to the era of straight-to-DVD action thrillers, Section 8 really has nothing new to say and is just a slick, modern spin on every routine action movie cliché imaginable.

It almost becomes a running joke that the “elite squad” of the title consists of morons who have no idea what they are doing.


That being said, there is nothing really wrong with Section Eight, apart from a lack of ambition. This film remains so much in its own lane that there is no effort involved for audiences.

When will every ex-military operative get the memo that the shadow company recruiting you to help pay the bills or get some payback is not what you hoped it would be and you will end up having to fight against?

This cynical "B" action movie plays like a series of ticked-off check boxes, rather than an intricately woven story, running its sad hero through the wringer and growing ever dumber as it goes along.

It’s got a hollow and unremarkable foundation, but does have solid action, clearly the biggest and most important element to get right in an action film.

This is a movie that constantly reminds us of its lazy and cynical goals.

An entirely disposable combination of conspiratorial skullduggery and mediocre action, unredeemed by the presence of a few recognizable faces in the cast.
