Sick of Myself

A bitterly funny black comedy about narcissism and the paths people attempt to take to fame.

In this era in which social media and the cult of celebrity are prone to combine, the Norwegian film Sick of Myself makes a considerable impression.

It's not subtle, but a committed performance from Thorp and some uncomfortable truths about the nature of self-promotion making this a thought-provoking satire.

If it wasn't for [Kujath]Thorp, this would be intolerable, but as Signe she creates a fascinatingly off-putting character study of a menace to society.

Comedies don’t get much darker than this. It’s certainly not for everyone, but I loved it.

It fizzles out in the end. But it is well directed and well performed and it is on to something. Doesn’t this take to the nth degree what we all feel, at some level?

Among the most engaging films with highly disagreeable characters throughout its runtime, Borgli uses Signe to illustrate narcissism in a compelling way that brings the other s----y side characters to life in ways that Östlund's films can only dream of

There's fun to be had from Signe's shameless narcissism, and her deluded fantasy scenes really lift the film when it gets a little stodgy. It's not quite enough, though, to justify spending 90 minutes in these people's company.

An absolutely merciless parasocial horror-satire in the vein of Ruben Östlund. But where Triangle of Sadness pulled its punches, Sick of Myself does not.

Sick of Myself is a caustic mirror that recognises how empty people feel if not given a certain kind of validation. It’s a sick society and Borgli’s playfulness is ultimately revealing an aching contemporary need and the measures people will go be noticed
