Sonic the Hedgehog 2

a globe-trotting adventure that touches on fun ideas for viewers of all ages, even if the film is too long and jarring to stick the landing.

Slightly grating, way too long, but not terrible.

As long as the Sonic sequels rely on its origins, weaving in aspects of the game into its narrative and keeping pace with the speedy hedgehog, it will appeal to its fan base – young kids and more mature Sega enthusiasts.

Anyone over the age of 12 had best beware.

The first Sonic worked because it refused, against all odds, to turn entirely into product. Sonic 2, by contrast, is a disappointment, but an inevitable one.

Dismiss it as another cash-in; you wouldn’t be wrong. But it’s pure and unapologetic fun, a thrill ride for kids that manages to fly by for adults, too.

Sonic 2 doffs its hat to the MCU so often, that every time Sonic uses one of his rings to open a portal, I half-expect Benedict Wong to step out of it.

Ignoring the terrible wedding scenes the film has some fun set pieces, good CG and good performances all round, with Jim Carrey once again stealing the show. Throw in some fun game references for me to point at and I really enjoyed my time with the film.

Sonic 2 is a complete embrace of its video game upbringing in a fun action packed ride.

Charmingly referencing several videogames in the series, while also delivering on laughs, and a wholesome story, here is a kids movie that is everything I expected in the best possible and predictable way.
