Do critics have brains (no because they wouldn’t have to be critics). This movie is a masterpiece. And the fact that it got a lower tomatometer rating than acolyte shows how inept critics are to do the easiest job of all time (watch movies, in the comfort of your own house, and tell the world what you thought about it). It shows what people had to go through just to get a job. This movie perfectly explains how and why the greatest generation got its name.

Feel good vibe and well conducted, it's not unmissable, but very entertaining. Wanted to watch something nice and was not disappointed.

Inspiring true story but the plot leaves a lot to the imagination. There are better stories out there.

Good movie that is based on a true story, just wished they explained what happened to each person at the end of the film.

SPOILER ALERT. I enjoyed this movie, but I didn’t love it. My problems with the movie are the screenplay and direction. Like many American films adapted from books, the script and direction, goes too “Hollywood”. For example, Joe Rantz and Joyce were engaged before college. They did not meet there. Joyce, like Joe scraped to pay her college fees and worked as a live-in maid. There was no need to change the storyline of their romance. The scenes of the rowing should have been poetic and lyrical. They were occasionally, but the film didn’t make those scenes memorable. In the films, The Natural and A River Flows Through It, the sports were elevated to art. I blame this failure on George Clooney’s direction. I don’t consider him subtle or nuanced as a storyteller. If this movie had been directed by Robert Redford, who has a depth of understanding of the American condition and psyche, it would have been a memorable movie instead of mere entertainment. If you want to know the real story, read the book and watch the American Experience documentary, The Boys of ’36.
