The Canyonlands

If this were an adventure movie or Utah tourism marketing, The Canyonlands would have a solid foundation. As a horror movie, though, nothing works.

But the most frustrating thing about this movie is that more than half of it takes place in the dark of night. Why call a motion picture "The Canyonlands," and then barely show them?

While the horror elements are too derivative, the setting is gorgeous. The empty space is capitalized on in a way not normally seen in the genre.

A horror project that unfortunately can't quite decipher which identity it wants to adopt.

The Canyonlands is a slasher that attempts to remember Native American massacres at the bloodsoaked hands of white miners; it's just not a very effective one on the basest subgenre merits.

Low-budget shocker leaves genre tropes behind for stupefying finale.
