The sympathetic tone of this film screams: "it should be okay when democrats do it". Skip this indulgent pablum.

Nothing great. Comes across at times as if it's just going through the motions despite Jackman's best efforts.

The acting is fine and the movie well-made, but there isn't a lot to it, meaning that even not knowing anything about its true-story subject matter of the scandal that derailed US presidential hopeful Gary Hart's campaign, it is difficult to feel interested or invested.

Well-acted, decently scripted, and yet the film never deeply probes or is as grippingly biting as it should be.

While I appreciated what they were trying to do with the Gary Hart story, I just felt it dragged on without delivering much of anything. It made me wonder if there really was a story with Gary Hart that needed to be told and why they hounded him over such a minor incident in the grand scheme of things to be a leader.

I'm glad I rewatched this before rating. The first time around I didn't appreciate how much undercurrent emotion there is, but I did pickup on some of the observations that it doesn't do a solid enough job of truly highlighting, and then addressing issues raised throughout… What it does do well is show the issues as they came up during the campaign, as well as doing something to show how various people felt. The one issue it gives time to is privacy. It does feel unfortunate that it doesn't explore this in more detail, but equally, this isn't a documentary exploring the issues of the privacy of those running for Office. The rewatch bumped this from 2* to 3.5*. HJ played a great role

Attention to detail is the key here. It displays well that great balance between professionals in their field doing their job well and trying to cope with new and unfamiliar situations the best they can. The narrative is also at least somewhat thought provoking. The drama feels downplayed, as it often is, but what's there definitely works. What I felt missing was a clear historical context.
