A guilty pleasure of mine this film.

I am a videogame critic, first of all, but I decided to rate this movie when I saw it and it really fascinated me. The character of Jack, despite being narcissistic and a serial killer, is really well made and the cast gives us a memorable performance. Additionally, the whole scene in Dante's Inferno are even more significant and don't spoil the film in spite of what many think. Plus, it is not THAT violent as people describe it. Sure, there are a few gorey scenes, but they are nothing compared to movies like Terrifier or A Serbian Film. At the end of the day, really a must watch if you enjoy epic poetry and horror films. Edit: does anyone except me appreciate this artwork for its phylosofical value? Do you guys think it is only a mediocre splatter? I invite you all to see the movie as an interesting story of an evolving character like Jack, that yes, in the end dies, but still allows you to get really into the film.

This is a chilling exploration of the mind of a serial killer. Lars von Trier's direction delivers a harrowing experience, moments of graphic violence with philosophical musings on art, morality, and the nature of evil. This film is a masterfully crafted journey into the darkest recesses of the human mind. I found it to be a compelling and provocative film.

Raw, unique, slowburn but also intrigued.

A deeply unpleasant film but I can't help but admire it to a certain degree. This is an autobiographical work and one gets the sense that no would could be as hard on von Trier as von Trier.

Shocking to myself, I enjoyed this one from Lars von Trier. Matt Dillon's performance sets the character's tone, nearly devoid of social skills and emotional maturity. He seems to be the most believable representation of a serial killer. Most of the movie is a character study as we observe the rabbit hole where he tumbles into a downward spiral of moral depravity. The movie's epilogue feels completely disjointed in tone and emotional spirit from the rest. But viewing it through the perspective of Catholicism and religion, which is briefly mentioned earlier in the film, it makes complete sense to say Jack continues his descent into the afterlife through several circles of hell.

It was just so disturbing and frustrating to watch. I don't even know how to rate this film's other elements. I was just too disturbed by what I was watching.
