This is not an easy movie to watch, but I think it is well-done. The characters feel real, and, for me, the story's dramatic arc is satisfying.

Definitely worth that watch. Lead actress Isabelle Fuhrman offers a master class portrayal of an obsessive compulsive, on edge, borderline to not so bordering self destructive character Alex who's beyond ultra competitive.

Good acting all around, especially the 2 leads. Also well directed in a stylistic yet intense manner. There is a lot going on here psychologically, some of which remains unexplored. My only complaint is that the dialogue is sometimes hard to follow.

Dull. Weird jumps and camera work instead of actually telling a story. Didn’t care about the main character at all because all you know is she’s hyper competitive. No depth. Nothing relatable. Turned it off.

I guess I am out of synch with many other reviews, but I did not like this movie. It was unpleasant to watch--maybe that's the point, but it is not what I want from a movie.

The character study was good. The production values were good. The story suddenly got good about two-thirds of the way through. However I fast forwarded through a lot of it out of boredom.

B+ . Actually this might be the best sports movie i've ever watched. It reminded me of the masterpiece "Whiplash" especially with the hand injuries. Its certainly gets you invested, well.. UP UNTIL they bring out her romantic life then it looses the plot.. It would have been a perfect film were it not for this disappointing sidetrack that added absolutely 0 value. If this film was made before the whole inclusivity era, anywhere before 2012 certainly not 2021, it would have been a masterpiece. ahh the simpler times.

This was a very intense thoughtful drama getting into the psyche of a young lady who was so overly driven in every aspect of her life, it comes close to crumbling. The quick and wonderful cinematography is what makes this film stand out.

On one hand, The Novice is fresh, interesting, and certainly captivating. But on the other, it's wildly derivative of other movies that employ similar elements surrounding a success obsessed college student and/or athlete. I simply could not watch this and not think of the visual aesthetics of The Social Network (hell, the "coolified" classical music during the rowing scenes from Social Network seems to be the entire aesthetic inspiration for The Novice), the story elements of Whiplash, and the dark athletic obsessiveness and self destruction of Foxcatcher. This significantly impacted my enjoyment of this movie because while the Novice is certainly pretty good, those are all great. It felt a bit like a younger sibling emulating the success of their older siblings and not surpassing them in one single way. Maybe the obsessive competitiveness in the movie rubbed off on me and made me compare it to better ones the whole time, I don't know. The Novice is pretty good, but I won't remember it for long.
