Take the film as a pared-back cousin to The Handmaid's Tale. But if some elements seem familiar, Szumowska has aces of her own to play.

Still waiting for female-directed horror films which break the genre's misogynistic tropes.

Szumowska and cinematographer Michal Englert encase her story in strikingly beautiful landscapes, and Cassidy makes the case that she's one of the most adventurous young actors out there.

What you're left with is not so much a story as a concept presented handsomely but very frustratingly.

“The Other Lamb” certainly isn’t subtle with its message. You can’t mistake it for anything other than a metaphor for abusive relationships and their punishing effects. But while it might be obvious, that doesn’t mean it’s ineffective.

Casts a wicked spell, one that will leave you beguiled and a little baffled by the end, in the best way possible.

The Other Lamb features plenty of striking visuals and several convincing performances. Still, its stylistic approach keeps the viewer at an emotional remove, leaving us to admire the result with cold appreciation.

The Other Lamb is a gripping meditation on the discovery of self and the gaining of independence.
