Reaffirms the genre's complex notion of thematic fragilities strengthened by mostly one-dimensional fear as metaphorical baggage; added onto being a generic follower mixing in the notes taken after "It" and James Wan amidst the bogeyman trope with not much disclosed. May not be fresh nor much built upon their own mythos as they only needed a platform to house the frights, differential conjuring in this haunting experience benefits from the foreboding atmosphere's effective terror and expressive performances to make up for the flaws threatening insignificance. I've been obsessed with horror films since I was 5-years-old hiding behind the couch, secretly watching Poltergeist when I was supposed to be in bed. When I say obsessed, I mean I very rarely watch anything from other genres. I fall asleep watching them, and I listen to scary story podcasts while I work out, drive, and hike. Now that I'm 30, I've been exposed to enough horror that I'm relatively desensitized. The concept is pretty basic - a plot line I've seen hundreds of times over. Even though I knew what to expect, it still had me gripping my seat. Being that I am a person with ADHD, I typically have to engage in multiple activities at once to occupy myself. Not once during this movie did my attention stray, and it kept my heart pounding in my chest. There are plot holes that left me with questions, and the ending was a bit unfulfilling. However, if I could achieve the same feeling I had while watching this film for the first time again, I would do it in a heartbeat. It's certainly not perfect, but I would absolutely still recommend it to other horror fans.

The movie doesn't resort to jump scares. There are some very spooky visual effects. It also portrays the struggle a stepmother experiences in the absence of the birth mother and the relationship she builds with her stepson.

Characters don't have common sense, everything is too dark (even in daylight!!) and the movie is VEEERY predictive. Boring.

This movie follows a father and young son moving into a new house along with his girlfriend. Strange things begin to happen right away. Lucas (little boy) starts playing with the little boy next door, only there is no family that lives next door. I found this movie enjoyable to be honest. It shows that just because I child isn't biologically yours, that you absolutely can love them and protect them as your own. The girlfriend stopped at nothing to protect Lucas even when his father kicked her out. The only thing I would change is the ending. I want to know what happened after everything that happened. Other than that, it truly was a great movie. I want to watch it again!

That could have been a 4 minute firm.. The dead spots far outweighed any plot

Absulute pure crap! Every scene is worse than the one before, character's behaviour is nonsense. Complete waste of time...

The majority of these reviews are far too critical of the movie. I liked that it didnt have an absurd amount of jump scares, and it didnt have cheesy effects that make me hate most scary movies. The plot line was pretty average as far as scary movies go.. stepmom tries to save her son from an imaginary evil in the house and the dad doesnt believe her/thinks she's crazy, but she wasnt. It was done well, and the acting was on point
