Its hard not be drawn in by the players, each completely endearing in her own way. While Plazas star power lures us in, her teammates and rivals have no trouble keeping us invested.

It's possible to watch The Pistol Shrimps as little more than the story of a unique, admittedly often silly niche subculture. But there's more if you want it, including a deceptive emotional weight and understated progressive streak that flows beneath.

Giving some long overdue and well-deserved attention to female athletes is just one of the great aspects of Brent Hodge's latest documentary, The Pistol Shrimps.

Don't know a thing about basketball? Neither do the Shrimps-or more specifically, neither do their dedicated podcasters... But Hodge delves into the lives of the league's women with such spark that the points don't really matter.

Frothy and brief, with a few big laughs.
