The Secret Life of Pets 2 brims with the simple joy of being on this planet, with all its ups and downs. I'm sure it will still be in cinemas for the looming school holidays. Any kid who likes animals will love it.

Make no mistake - The Secret Life of Pets 2 is a kids-only affair.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 offers a pleasant, innocuous 90 minutes of entertainment for children and to adults who moderate their expectations. Was it worth Illumination spending $US80 million dollars on? Possibly not, but then it isn't your money or mine.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 nicely expands this world with the colorful, action-packed scenes set in the farm, and new characters like Daisy and Rooster are good additions to broaden the cast.

This second chapter in Max's story is refreshingly amiable.

The sequel to 2016's animated hit is even thinner on plot than the first one, whose title promised a look behind the scenes and inside the minds of cats and dogs.

Frankly it should’ve been a collection of short films instead. If you like this sort of thing, that’s great, but Toy Story this still ain’t.

The film, I must admit, has a specific kinetic energy that keeps the pace moving. You could almost call it an animated film about nothing when all three separate storylines meet at the end.

Does the absolute bare minimum it has to in order to keep children entertained and not waste adults’ time.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 provides much fun for its young target audience and also a little bit of inspiration for their parents.
