The Sound of Violet

While it may not have viewers rolling on the floor with laughter, its emotional depth and sincerity leave a lasting impression.

"The characters are so one-dimensional that the film appears to flounder when asked to provide any secondary features of them beyond the single adjective identifiers that would fit on a pitch card: autistic, prostitute, grandmother, pimp, boss..."

Sappy and preachy to a fault, the melodrama The Sound of Violet pushes the sexist message that a woman who’s a sex worker can’t be happy unless she’s rescued by a man with enough money to take care of her. The Sound of Violet is completely tone-deaf.

Clunky, contrived and so saccharine that it could end up giving you a cavity.

Once the drama of its chosen realities thicken and the laughs no longer come easy, its sense of correction can feel quite heavy-handed.

Maybe it's a little too brave.

Perhaps this offensive melodrama worked better on the page, where its abrupt tonal shifts and wackadoo plot twists could have a little more room to breathe or, at the very least, allow for the necessary suspension of disbelief.

Once I embraced the film’s true intentions, I found The Sound of Violet a bold and engaging film.
