The Substance
audience Reviews
, 75% Audience Score- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsA beautifully presented movie that is both interesting and disturbing that ends with a freakish 80s character a la hellraiser. Unexpected but weird and worth watching.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsExcellent acting, cinematography, editing, and especially make-up! Not a single thing in this movie was done poorly, and even the weaker elements were held-up by the excellence of all the other moving parts. It has a very lucid and dreamlike quality which makes the more real aspects ever more haunting. The film is a body horror movie, and while it does have excellently grotesque special and practical effects, it revels in its ability to make even the normal human body seem horrid in the eyes of the characters. Every shot of normal body parts and functions are shot in such a way as to make us experience the characters' disgust in it. A body horror movie which manages to make the normal seem grotesque. The ending, while intentionally made this way, does get to a point where the camp overshadows any last semblance of horror it had, despite being in theory the most horrifying entity thus far; though the ending was quite spectacular even so.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsA absolutely unhinged masterpiece. Body horror at its finest. I really enjoyed the acting in the movie. The story line was incredibly unique. The ending for me was the best part. Without spoilers it truly was wild. I'd highly recommend this movie.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsDemi was absolutely phenomenal as usual. Her character in this is so interesting and bizarre. This is one of my favorite horror movies of the year!!!
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsI kinda wish the director would zoom the camera out just a little more… maybe write a better script next time. So glad I rented instead of bought it, but I’m still going to ask for my money back
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsBrilliant plot, great writing, amazing characterisation, and captivating acting. This is a nuanced film, the sort where even if you watch it three times and go in for a fourth, you'd find details that you missed earlier.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsAwesome, unique concept. Very fever-dreamish. Very gross at times in unexpected ways. Also very campy. I appreciated visual references to Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsCan’t understand how a film that started out as good as this one does ends up in the mess I watched. Great Cronenberg style body horror & strong critique of how many view youth & beauty for the first one and a half to 2 hours. Then it somehow goes way off in to splattery D-grade monster/gore that is very reminiscent of Troma.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsI would have gave it the full 5 stars but the last 20 mins or so (when Elizasue) goes to the NYE party is just a bit too ridiculous and through me off of what was otherwise an amazing, deep, serious movie
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsAwww she didn't go on her date with Spark Brushel from Ace Attorney 😞
