The Wretched

There's a good balance of firmness and entertaining. Creepy thrills and atmospheric chills, for a pretty modest horror film I thought it did the job pretty well.

There's something appealing about its modest ambitions, with its cast of unknowns, relative low stakes and retro jump scares.

If this really was some lost relic of the VHS era, it'd pass the blind rental test: There is a witch, and she's as creepy as the box art would surely promise.

THE WRETCHED has so much working in its favor, but it needed to be more fine-tuned to avoid some tone issues and plot holes.

The Wretched never overstays its welcome, holding some unexpected moments up to the very last shot. A solid blend of just-enough story, paired with unsettling frights, keeps the hooks in.

There isn't a single twist you won't see coming, but underneath its PG-13 veneer are some nasty R-rated surprises that elevate it above standard horror fare.
