At times it almost works, almost funny, almost tense, and almost good, but it just does not get there.

Psycho boomer with dead wife issues vs. hipster millennial with dead daddy issues. Takes some odd paths to get where it's going, and introduces quite a few side characters along the way without much purpose. There is a good movie to be had from this idea, this just isn't it.

There's quite a few amusing gags in this killing spree for the hell of it movie. Some of it is clever and fun and some requires a stronger-then-normal suspension of disbelief. The meta gag is the "everybody gets a trophy" mind-set of the Millennials and the sour misplaced disappointment of the Boomers. I'm smack dab in the middle of the Baby Boomers but I was more sympathetic to the Millennial final girl in the movie. Amanda Crew is terrific as the put-upon lonely woman who only wants to get away from the city for a weekend, and she's not suspicious that a house that looks like it rents for $2,500 a night is available for $500 for the weekend. Robert Patrick is wonderful as the bitter old guy who feels taunted and threatened by the young (in garishly funny dreams). There are missteps, to be sure, but it's a fun watch.

Stumbled on the last 37 minutes of this flick, and it was funny, mildly scary, mildly suspenseful, and satirical--focusing on rural vs urban, social class, and Milenniels vs Baby Boomers. Heavy-handed and not brilliant amusing, but pretty original.

Watched this more or less by accident, with no expectations. Turned out to be very good, a lot of fun and with great performances. It might be missing one last punch at the end, but it's definitely worth a watch.

It doesn't work very well as the slasher film it's sold as, but as the social satire of Boomer vs Millennial it's actually pretty damn funny. It's a little ham-fisted in it's delivery, and the main girl is a bit of an obnoxious brat, but overall it's a really entertaining skewering of the generational divide.

    ‘Tone-Deaf' Forgets to Be Funny
  • Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
'Tone-Deaf' is enjoyable enough, but it also isn't nearly as good as it could have been. The narrative is all over the place, and the plot doesn't really flow the way it should. Still, it's got some funny gags, welcome satire, and yet another fantastic performance from a scenery-chewing Robert Patrick. It may be a bit sloppy, but there's still plenty of fun to be had.

A good watch, will watch again and can recommend, BUT be ready to pay attention: there are quite a few details to see. What was this movie! Robert Patrick was awesome, completely sold me on an older man just slowly losing grips with reality in a beautifully psychotic way. While I can't say I'm Amanda Crew's biggest fan, this definitely proves she's got some real acting range past what Silicon Valley was able to give her. And it's just good to see the way this situation is resolved. You don't see it very often, and parodies joke about it. And if you look carefully, there's a comedy hidden in this too.
