Too Late

The only thing scary about the horror comedy Too Late is that people thought this painfully unfunny dud was good enough to make into a movie. It's a fake feminist movie [where] a woman who wants men to be killed [is] supposed to be 'female empowerment.'

Deadpan and droll in its exploration of monsters and their enablers, it doesn't so much expose anything new about what people are willing to do in order to succeed as present it with a puckish flair and a wicked sense of irony.

Too Late is billed as a cozy horror-comedy, and I'll admit to not having any idea what that meant. It means it's a comedy with horror elements but it's super soft on scares.

Don't go into this film hoping for the gore of the Saw franchise or the ridiculousness of the Scary Movie series. This is more lite PG-13 gore, nevertheless quite enjoyable.

They're all good. More of a smart throwaway than anything great, Too Late is nonetheless a likable horror comedy, with considerably more emphasis on the funny part of that equation.

An uneven but likeable film with the guts to do things differently, Too Late won't work for everyone but its likely to win admirers who will watch it again and again.

Perhaps a metaphor for showbiz backstabbing, this terror comedy creates a realistic standup comedy nightclub atmosphere but seems timid about going much further with either its jokes or its horror.

The movie takes on a lot - and most of the time, it does a decent job. The problem becomes, it deals with so much nothing stands out. Fun, but unmemorable.

Too Late is worth a look for its oddball vibes and roster of skillful comedians. Considering this is the director's feature-length debut, it does establish D.W. Thomas as a filmmaker to watch.

Lingers on the fringes of dark comedy and horror, but derives a lot of grisly, cheeky fun out of its main idea.
