Tornado

Tornado may not be to everyone’s taste, but its originality deserves more than a nod of respect.

None of these are credible characters, though. They’re half-formed, bored gestures from a film that’s not eccentric enough to be fully arthouse and not proficient enough to compete with genre cousins...

With enough nerve and talent, wonders can be conjured with just a handful of figures and a few simple props, in the midst of a strange old country.

A terrifically entertaining film with a dark, strange, offbeat edge.

Tornado will frustrate the giblets out of anyone seeking narrative momentum or emotional catharsis. But viewers willing to sit with its stark silences and oppressive atmospherics can look forward to a singular, if rarely easy, watch.

It’s a super-bloody revenge story filmed in just 25 days with a running time of 90 minutes. We love a 90-minute film, so I feel bad saying this, but it does feel as if it needed more time to cook.

Tornado boasts some striking cinematography by Robbie Ryan, but beyond that the film is a disappointingly unengaging genre mish-mash that is muted by filmmaker John Maclean’s oddly stifled approach.

Economical yet effective, what it lacks in character development, it just about makes up for with intricate, atmospheric thrills. A peculiar concoction, but Maclean’s film gets the job done.

Tornado will be too much of a slow burn for some but it’s very well made with compelling characters

A deliberately paced story punctuated by bursts of brutal action, gorgeous to look at but dramatically rather thin...impressive in spurts but odd and ultimately unsatisfying as a whole.
