Turn Every Page: The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb

This is, after all, a daughter profiling her dad and his co-worker. That intimacy informs the energy of the film, and opens up avenues hardly available to most documentarians.

Great stuff over the last 40 years. I really enjoyed it.

Would Caro’s books have been any less great if he and Gottlieb had never met? Who knows? But as this bracingly affectionate film makes clear, it was the gift of a lifetime for both that they did.

The dual portrait Lizzie Gottlieb paints of these two men of letters is tender and absorbing. She loves these guys, these guys love each other — though they would be embarrassed to put that word to it — and they love the work.

The complex dynamics between the two men create their own intriguing subject of a well-made documentary.

“Turn Every Page” is a fascinating and involving behind the scenes glimpse of these literary titans and their sometimes-contentious affiliation, a partnership that continues to this day.

There’s no doubt both Gottlieb and Caro are geniuses, but more than that, the film shows them as curious, industrious and still meticulous about the written word.
